With a roster of more than 500 members, the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department considers its membership to be its backbone. Many volunteer members sacrifice their time to attend meetings, spend countless hours in training to enhance their skills, and respond to emergencies whenever called upon. Other members bring specialized skills to the department’s business and administration by serving on departmental committees and the Fire Board.

In all, the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department is made up of eight individual fire companies and two department stations. These 10 stations collectively house the department’s equipment, which includes nine pumpers, a ladder truck, four salvage units, a rescue unit, an air truck, a hose tender, a mobile command unit, and a rescue boat.

As a result of the dedication that our members have made to our department and community, through hours upon hours of training logged, response times to emergency calls, investments in fire suppression equipment and the upgrades in the city water system made by City Administrations, the Louisiana Fire Insurance Rating Bureau has issued the department a rating of a Class 3, allowing residents within the department’s protection area to enjoy lower fire insurance premiums. However, none of this would be possible without the dedicated community support offered to the department and its members.

This unwavering community support for the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department is best witnessed at the annual Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair. Revenue generated by the fair, which is entirely run by department members and other volunteers, represents almost 50 percent of the department’s annual budget. The four-day event, always held the first weekend in May, consists of rides, music, food, live auctions, a parade, and lots of family fun.

The Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department is a living legacy and is continuing to grow and evolve. What started quite humbly as a bucket brigade is now a thriving, state-of-the art department with one of the largest and most dedicated volunteer memberships in the country. It is a culture. It is community. It is a family. And it is more than just fighting fires. In the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department, we challenge our members to “become something greater,” and that is more than a slogan…it is a way of life.
